Photinia 'Red Robin'

Photinia x Fraseri, a part of the Rosaceae family, is a popular favourite in the SH with bright red new foliage in spring and glossy green new leaves make a lovely hedge and a real feature. In spring this plant produces dense clusters of small creamy white flowers that have a strong perfume that were not pruned back in winter. Grows to height of 3-4m.

Other varieties such as the Rubusta and Glabra (Japanese Photinia) are also popular in the SH.

When to prune?

If you want to have rich display of vibrant red foliage, prune to buds in late autumn/winter, before the plant begins to flower in spring. Conversely, if you would like to have flowers, avoid pruning early spring when the flower buds are starting to form. In the Southern Highlands, prune in late spring after flowering, to encourage new growth.
